
Multilingual GEO: Getting AI to Cite You in Every Language
The iron law of multilingual GEO: an AI engine prefers to cite sources in whatever language it was asked in — so each language’s content has to be rebuilt locally, not translated. That means separate question research, native phrasing, and local data and examples per language, plus correct hreflang so engines can tell your versions apart. How do AI engines handle queries in different languages?
Watch how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews behave and a consistent pattern emerges: ask in English and the answer leans on English sources; ask the exact same thing in Spanish or Chinese and the source list swaps out for pages in that language. The reason is simple — an engine retrieves the content that sits closest to the query in meaning, and same-language content is naturally closest. Citing a same-language source is also the only kind a reader can actually click through to.
For a multilingual site this cuts both ways. The bad news: your English authority doesn’t automatically get your other-language pages cited — you have to earn each language from scratch. The good news: each language is its own battlefield. English GEO is crowded; in most other languages, far fewer sites have the fundamentals right, so the first-mover advantage is real.
Principle 1: Rebuild locally, don’t translate
For the same topic, users in different languages ask different questions, use different words, and care about different things. Localizing well happens on three levels:
- The question layer. Run a fresh intent study for each language. An English user searches “GEO tools”; a user in another market phrases it differently and tacks on a year or a country. Different question maps mean different article lists.
- The wording layer. Even two variants of the same language aren’t a font swap — spelling, idiom, and product vocabulary differ (think “optimise” vs. “optimize,” or the vocabulary gaps between Traditional and Simplified Chinese). The wrong word tells both AI and the reader “this wasn’t written for me.”
- The material layer. Data, prices (and currency), regulations, and case studies all have to be local. Quote US pricing and US examples to a non-US reader and your credibility takes an immediate hit.
A practical test: if a “translated” article has the same list, examples, and FAQ as the original, it probably won’t get cited in the target-language market — because it never answered that market’s actual questions.
Principle 2: hreflang lets engines tell your versions apart
The technical bedrock of a multilingual site is hreflang. Boil the rules down to four:
- Every page declares itself + all language versions + x-default — none optional.
- Tags must be reciprocal: if A points to B, B points back to A.
- Get the language codes right: Traditional Chinese
zh-Hant, Simplified Chinesezh-Hans— not a barezh. - Subdirectories are the least painful architecture:
/en/,/zh-hant/,/zh-hans/.
The classic failure of broken hreflang is versions cannibalizing each other: Google serves the wrong-language version to your users and both versions’ rankings sink together. GEO measurement (question set → monthly test → log the citations) has to be split by language:

A pragmatic order for a three-language site
With Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and English, how should GEO resources be allocated? Judge by “market × competition.” Traditional Chinese serves a market with high AI adoption and low GEO competition — the best return on investment, and a natural main front. English is the biggest market but the fiercest; pick a narrow niche to fight in. Q1: My budget’s tight — can I launch with machine translation and localize later? Not recommended. Bulk machine-translated pages accumulate as content debt first (poor indexing, zero clicks, a drag on your site-level quality signals), and cleaning them up later is harder than doing it right. Better to run fewer languages well — open just one language at a time and do it properly.
Q2: Does hreflang really affect GEO? AI doesn’t even read hreflang. The direct effect is on Google’s ecosystem (including AI Overviews); the indirect effect is on everything — broken hreflang lets the wrong-language version accumulate ranking and link signals, so the version the AI retrieves is the wrong one. When the foundation is crooked, every floor above it leans.
Q3: Can I “convert” Traditional Chinese into Simplified to save costs? Character conversion is only step one — vocabulary, examples, and the question list all need reworking. In practice a Simplified version takes about 40–60% of the original’s effort — cheaper than a full rewrite, but nowhere near the push of a button.
