
What Is SynthID? Google’s AI Watermark and Its Indexing Impact
SynthID is Google DeepMind’s watermarking technology for AI-generated content: it embeds a marker that humans can’t perceive but machines can detect into AI-produced text, images, audio, and video. For text, it works by subtly nudging the token probability distribution during generation, so the output carries a statistically recognizable pattern. You can’t read the difference, but Google may well be able to tell that “this passage came out of Gemini.”
How SynthID works (the text version)
Every time a large language model produces a word, it samples from a probability distribution over a set of candidate tokens. The SynthID text watermark tampers with that sampling step: following a secret pattern, it systematically nudges the probability of certain tokens being chosen. In a single sentence you’d never notice. But accumulated across a whole article, it forms a signature that can be verified statistically.
Three defining properties:
- Invisible: it doesn’t change the meaning or hurt readability. Human readers feel nothing.
- Hard to wash out: because you don’t know what the pattern looks like, paraphrasing, rewording, or cutting paragraphs is not guaranteed to remove it. The field consensus is “even a rewrite may not scrub it.”
- Detection needs a key: only the party that holds the embedding pattern (that is, Google itself) can detect it reliably.
Google began deploying SynthID on images in 2023, then extended it to text; the output of the Gemini model family carries this watermark. In 2024 it even open-sourced part of the text watermarking tooling (SynthID Text).
The official stance: SynthID doesn’t directly affect ranking
Let’s put Google’s official line on the table first: SynthID exists for “AI content transparency,” not as a ranking signal. Google has also repeatedly restated that it judges content on quality, not on whether a human or an AI wrote it. By the official account, a genuinely helpful article that happens to carry the watermark should not fail to rank because of it.
Field observation: a new site publishing all-Gemini content saw indexing collapse to near zero
But an early-2026 field test paints the other side of the picture:
- Across 20-plus new sites, the final articles were produced entirely by Gemini 3.0 directly → Google barely indexed them and they couldn’t rank.
- The tester’s inference was that the SynthID text watermark let Google directly recognize “pure Gemini output” and gave the new sites the cold shoulder.
- After switching to a split workflow — “Gemini does only the analysis and outline, then Kimi or Claude writes the final article” — indexing and ranking recovered immediately.
- An interesting control group: Bing did the exact opposite. The same Gemini articles performed well on Bing, with some sites breaking 30,000 monthly organic visits.
To be honest about it: this is a field observation and inference, not a mechanism Google has confirmed. More than one explanation is possible (new-site trust, content quality, and sampling bias could all play a part). But when “the official line says no impact” and “the field sees a strong correlation” coexist, the pragmatic move is to manage the risk away rather than bet on the official line.

Mind the detail on “rewriting”: because the watermark pattern is unknown, having Gemini rewrite its own article may not scrub it.
