
How to Tell Whether Content Was Written by AI or a Human
There are three routes to detecting whether a piece of content is AI- or human-written: statistical AI detectors (fast but high false-positive rates), watermark detection (like SynthID, the most reliable but readable only by the party that embedded it), and manual signal-reading (gauging filler density and information gain). The bottom line first: no publicly available tool gives you a 100% answer — and for SEO practice, “was this written by AI?” is not even the question that matters most. “Is it valuable?” is.
Method one: statistical AI detectors
The AI detectors on the market (GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, and the like) all work on roughly the same principle: they analyze a text’s perplexity (how predictable the word choices are) and burstiness (variation in sentence length). AI text tends toward even word choice and steady sentence structure; human writing runs long then short, with the odd strange word choice thrown in.
The limits are just as clear:
- The false-positive rate is not negligible. Vendors claim 85–99% accuracy, but independent tests consistently show real-world performance below the claims — especially the false positive of “flagging human writing as AI.” OpenAI pulled its own detector in 2023 precisely because accuracy was too low (a true-positive rate of only about 26%).
- Non-native writers get hurt the most. Conservative word choice and tidy sentence structure make human text statistically look a lot like AI.
- Mixed content is nearly impossible to score. An AI first draft plus a human rewrite, or human writing with an AI polish, lands the score in a gray zone.
Where it fits in practice: fine as a signal, useless as evidence. Any decision that leans on a detector score as its sole basis — flagging a student for cheating, rejecting a submission — does not hold up.
Method two: watermark detection (SynthID)
Google DeepMind’s SynthID takes a different tack: instead of guessing after the fact, it embeds a statistical pattern into the token-probability distribution at the moment of generation, and verifies it later with a key. In theory this is the most reliable method — but the crucial limitation is that only the party holding the embedding key (Google itself) can reliably detect it. The general public has no tool to use.
This has real consequences for SEO. Field tests showed 20-plus new sites publishing content produced entirely with Gemini 3.0 getting almost no indexing from Google — the inference being that SynthID lets Google “read” pure Gemini output; switching to a different model for the final draft restored indexing. Method three: manual signal-reading
No tool — just the characteristics of the content itself. The tells of straight-from-AI text:
- Zero concrete facts. No numbers, prices, or dates, just “significantly improves” and “worth taking seriously.”
- Symmetrical paragraph structure. Every H2 section is almost exactly the same length, each one “definition + three bullet points + a wrap-up.”
- No first-hand fingerprints. No case details, no accounts of failure, no “when we actually tested it we found.”
- So neutral it takes no stance. Every option “has its pros and cons, depending on your needs.”
- Filler openings and closings. “In today’s rapidly changing era…”
Manual reading can’t tell you “whether AI was used,” but it can tell you “whether anyone was minding the store” — and the latter is where the quality problem actually lives.

SEO practice: what you should actually be checking
Back to the motive. Most people who want to detect AI content are really trying to answer two questions:

- “Is this good enough to publish?” → What you should be checking is structure and information gain: an answer-first opening, concrete data, an FAQ, one job per page — these can be scored objectively with a tool.
“AI or human” is a question of source; what search engines and readers ultimately penalize is a question of quality. Spend your detection effort on quality, and the return on investment is far higher.

Q1: Is there a tool that detects AI content with 100% accuracy? No. Statistical detectors carry a non-negligible false-positive rate; SynthID-style watermarks are the most reliable, but only the embedder can verify them. Any tool claiming 100% accuracy is itself worth doubting.
